***POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ONE PIECE, NARUTO, & BLEACH***
First of all, this discussion isn't about Anime being edited from Japanese to American television. I mean anime that's been sightly altered or changed due to violence, blood, language, or even partial nudity (usually excessive cleavage).
Japanese television has no issues with showing blood, violence, or minor language, but it seems they got a real issue with drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gore, excess amounts of blood, nudity (of course), and cleavage that's on the verge of nudity. Shonen mangas usually get adapted to Shonen animes. Most of these animes have been fortunate enough to dodge most of these edits but all of shonen mangas I've read have usually had some sort of change to them.
1. One Piece. One Piece is a mega popular anime in Japan. Of course, I don't think it's nearly as good as it used to be (Season 1 is still the best imo), but the series has had it's fair share of minor changes and even removals.
Does anyone here know how Luffy got the scar under his cheek? You would if you would of read the manga. In the manga, Luffy wanted to prove that he was serious about becoming a pirate, so he got a knife, and cut himself under the eye. It's why he's had a scar (looks more like stitches) under his left eye since Episode 1. Later on, I remember when zeff lost his leg, the anime made up a scene on where Zeff's leg got stuck underwater when he was trying to rescue Sanji, so he ripped it off by tying it to a anchor. In the manga, Zeff ate his own leg because he gave all of the emergency food to Sanji when they were stuck on a island.
2. Bleach. Bleach hasn't had too many edits, most of them aren't really notable. But we have had scenes on where the anime changed little things. When the 8th espada ate his soldiers to recover his strength, he transformed them into orbs of energy then ate them. In the manga, he just kind of ate them. In the manga, the 3rd espada had some cleavage showing some underboob (lol). In the anime, her breasts are completely covered up. More recently, Ishida had his arm badly injured. In the manga, his arm was ripped off completely.
3. Naruto Shippuden. I never read Part I of the Naruto manga. I'm sure the manga has had little changes to it but since I never read it, I can't say very much about it. Part II is all I've read (most of it). I really only know of one big change in the anime, was that they never let Shikamaru smoke at all. Shortly, after Asuma died, Shikamaru smoked his first cigarette. The anime continued on this change, by making awkward scenes where Shikamaru constantly flipped Asuma's lighter all the time. All of the scenes where he's seen smoking all remove the cigarette completely. The change was also brought in the third Shippuden movie as well.
4. Reborn. This is an anime that has been hit the hardest. The anime has so much going for it that it's hard to hate it. All of the blood from the anime of this series has been completely removed. In the first season, they briefly used blood, but all of it was gone by the time the second season came around. If you read this manga, you can see that blood is all over the characters when they are in battles (which in my opinion gives it a more serious tone). When you see a character covered in scratches or being called "wounded", you better be seeing some blood on them. This is where Reborn doesn't deliver. A lot of scenes it's hard to tell if someone is injured due to this. In fact, unless the character (or another character) says they are wounded, you wouldn't even know it due to the fact that the wounds are
never shown.
I know I'm putting down this show a lot for it, but I'm hoping they at least add in blood to possibly a different release of the series, or perhaps even the DVDs. I know this isn't likely, but it really does hurt such a good series.
And that is all. I know a lot of you have probably seen more than I have since I barely read manga at all. Thoughts? Opinions? What have you found? Please compare. I'd love to know!
